Hoyas are great houseplants for any level of experience! You love them, but do they love you back? This post will teach you everything you need to know to ensure your Hoyas are thriving. From basic care to Hoya blooms - I have you covered. Caring for a new plant can be intimidating - but here you are reading this blog and doing your research! You've already done the hardest part.
Watering, Light, Humidity, Oh My!
Let's break down the general care requirements of this houseplant. As with all plants, some species of Hoya may stray slightly from these general guidelines. But this should cover the majority (especially all beginner varieties)!
Hoya Care Guide
Watering - Hoyas do not like to sit in soggy soil. Let their soil dry out before watering again, but do not let them sit dry for long!
Light - Hoyas are light loving plants. Placing them near a South, West, or East facing window is best! If you don't have this access in your home, no worries. Add a grow light and they will be just as happy!
Humidity - They will appreciate extra humidity if you can provide it, but most Hoyas are just fine with ambient humidity (the levels in most homes).
Growing Medium - Hoyas do great in soil, but will also thrive in semi-hydroponics. If you want to grow them in soil, a chunky mix is a must. I use and recommend Sol Soil's Houseplant Chunky Mix (Code GrownWright = 10% Off!) If you want to try semi-hydro I recommend using Pon (this is what I grow almost all my Hoyas in!).
How Can I Make My Hoya Bloom?

The best part about Hoyas, in my opinion, is the blooms! So, can you do things to encourage your Hoya to bloom faster and more often?
Hoyas bloom as they mature and are happy in their environment. Unfortunately, there is no tried and true method to make your Hoya bloom without fail. Some species of Hoya bloom more easily and more often than others. So, if it is blooms you are after, try some of these Hoyas: Hoya Krohniana, Hoya Krimson Princess/Queen, Hoya Mathilde, Hoya Bella, and Hoya Multiflora.
With a little patience and following the care guide outlined above, your Hoyas will be blooming in no time! Hoya Tip: once your Hoya forms peduncles (small buds that will turn into blooms), do not let your Hoya dry out completely. This will help ensure your Hoya blooms make it to that gorgeous, final stage!
